Making Things Happen Rather Than Making Things

The lecture of Art and Activism

Oda Projesi — Room Project    This project designates three ground-floor rooms on a small courtyard square in Istanbul, as well as three female artists, Özge Aç¦kkol, Günes Savas and Seçil Yersel. But Oda Projesi also denotes a form of cultural practice that is utilised by the artists at this place, a practice approaching the notion of jointly produced culture in an open-minded way, willing to establish connections.

I think the objective of this project is similar with our projectopen kitchen (opening up a space in which exhibitions take place, something also done in the space.) we invite our friends in UCAPSEAD course, which from different countries to join our project. Then we cooking, eating and talking in the open kitchen. It is quite inconceivable to eat together, because we have different beliefs and lifestyle, but it has happened, just like everything we have to do in the daily life. In our opinion, acting to bring about change, this is the Activisim. We get people together and share different cultures through food. At the same time, the project are opening and changing their minds to understand each other. Finally, we made a short film to record all things that happen in the kitchen.I think this is Art, also "un-arting".

Final presentation in Margate

We took about 3 hours to Margate, which is a very beautiful place near the sea. After visiting the gallery, we ate together at the table(Tabula), then our group leader made a wonderful presentation to show our project, and we got many useful feedbacks.

It is an amazing experience for us. Through this project, we have got many interesting information about cooperation, food, multi culture and so on. We get together every day and share our traditional food and culture in an open kitchen. At the same time, we are making a short film to record all things that happen in the kitchen. It is a good way to get more understanding with each other. We look forward to getting closer and breaking the barriers with language culture and thought pattern in the multi culture group. On the other hand, we hope this project will be a new communicating beginning in other different multi groups. Finally, more communication, more abundant grows.Communication does not have just one way.
