I am timid as a human, but I am brave as insect.

"Brave insect" is my favorite work in the GDAD show. When I came to the showroom, my eyes were attracted from this work. It looks like a head of goat with white skin, but has a little difference. After read the introduction, I found the work is totally unexpected, and very interesting. Firstly, the work's name is brave insect, which is hard to associate with big size of the work. Secondly, the designer comparing himself to an insect living in modern society, and has to feeling everything, sensitively to protect himself. He is smaller than a human and bigger than insect. The designer use a sensitive way to perform his idea, it is easy to make sense and also full creativity. Finally, I asked the designer why he chose the wool and cotton as the materials. He told me, the touch of wool and cotton are similar with human’s skin. If a shirt is a symbol of sociality, it seems just an insect’s shell as well.

I think this work is not only express designer’s feeling about modern society, but also explored a weak situation that most of people living in the modern society, with much anxious and sensitive, even fear, but still have a hope in their small universe.

Maker-An Attitude Of Life

As the improvement of technology faster and faster, we create many amazing products that convenient for our life, also change our life. On the other hand, there are massive products output through the assembly line production, they are the same and lifeless. People just produce and consume them again again, no one care about the process behind the product.

Today, I saw a video named "Maker", it showed many interesting products come from different makers in different fields and how they do that. Like car, watch, furniture and so on. The makers making things relay on high-tech and machines, however, they are not exact makers in my heart.

In my personal opinion, the real maker who should make something by hand with original ways. There is no high-tech and machine, some one just make something which is natural and useful. There are also lively and high quality, without massive output. The real maker spend much time on making things and enjoy the process of that, just like making their life. Making things with a pure heart is a kind of lifestyle of the makers and also is their attitude of life.

Case study 1: Chase Jarvis

Chase Jarvis' speech -- explained how creativity is the new literacy.

Taking nothing and making something. It sounds funny but full with information. In my opinion, making something is easy and no easy, it depend on what kind of things you want to make. Usually, we make something because we need it, so it should be useful, then it should be beautiful, also we hope it be creative. But how to do that? What we should take for that? However, I think taking nothing is on the right way, sometimes, we have to start from a very isolated position, and do not know too much.It is important for making something creatively. Just like a child, which is I want to talk in the next point.

Imagination > Knowledge As the viewpoint above, I am going to talk about the education system in China. Like the small interaction in the speech, I found we can make some ingenious things when we were 6 or 7 years old, before we went to school. And after that, the education system killed our imagination, which I had experienced in the student life.Because in China, education system just focus on knowledge and the grade of exams. Students have huge burdens on so many exams, they just listening the lectures and doing homework. They are not questions, no criticisms, even no imagination, because they do not have time to do that! Maybe, in some ways, it is a good way to get knowledge well. But for me, I hope education system is a good tool for children to explore their potential and help them to create more wonderful things for our world. So we need more imagination rather than knowledge.

Making Things Happen Rather Than Making Things

The lecture of Art and Activism

Oda Projesi — Room Project    This project designates three ground-floor rooms on a small courtyard square in Istanbul, as well as three female artists, Özge Aç¦kkol, Günes Savas and Seçil Yersel. But Oda Projesi also denotes a form of cultural practice that is utilised by the artists at this place, a practice approaching the notion of jointly produced culture in an open-minded way, willing to establish connections.

I think the objective of this project is similar with our projectopen kitchen (opening up a space in which exhibitions take place, something also done in the space.) we invite our friends in UCAPSEAD course, which from different countries to join our project. Then we cooking, eating and talking in the open kitchen. It is quite inconceivable to eat together, because we have different beliefs and lifestyle, but it has happened, just like everything we have to do in the daily life. In our opinion, acting to bring about change, this is the Activisim. We get people together and share different cultures through food. At the same time, the project are opening and changing their minds to understand each other. Finally, we made a short film to record all things that happen in the kitchen.I think this is Art, also "un-arting".

Final presentation in Margate

We took about 3 hours to Margate, which is a very beautiful place near the sea. After visiting the gallery, we ate together at the table(Tabula), then our group leader made a wonderful presentation to show our project, and we got many useful feedbacks.

It is an amazing experience for us. Through this project, we have got many interesting information about cooperation, food, multi culture and so on. We get together every day and share our traditional food and culture in an open kitchen. At the same time, we are making a short film to record all things that happen in the kitchen. It is a good way to get more understanding with each other. We look forward to getting closer and breaking the barriers with language culture and thought pattern in the multi culture group. On the other hand, we hope this project will be a new communicating beginning in other different multi groups. Finally, more communication, more abundant grows.Communication does not have just one way.

It Is a Long Long Journey

It is quite crazy but inspiring. The feelings came out in my heart when I saw the documentary about Ai Weiwei's work(5.12 citizens' name list investigation). It is so complex work to do within the disaster zone,by gathering and confirming comprehensive details about the students, such as their age, region, school, and grade, the group managed to affirm that there were 5192 students who perished in the disaster. On the other hand,I can't imagine how many inconsolable people in the earthquake that they have to face to.

In this work, black background and white characters, which looks very simple but full of power. The rolling names just like many different faces looking us and waiting for our help, which are clear and strong, like a Chinese archaism said "It takes some silence to make sound".

Ai Weiwei through a special way to express his anger, sorrow, disappointment and determination. The determination about protecting people's life and right should be get louder and louder.

However, there is not a perfect way for people to express their voices. It is quite a long journey we need more understandings and forgiveness in our humanity.
